The Benefits of Icing

Icing is the preferred form of therapy for experienced athletic trainers!

The Preferred Way!

Ice is the preferred form of therapy for athletic trainers when their athletes experience a sports injury. When the athlete is taken out of the game or practice due to an injury, most of the time the athletic trainer will apply ... you guessed it, ICE!

Ice therapy is proven to:Reduce Pain

  • Reduce Pain
  • Reduce Swelling
  • Reduce Bruising

It does this by constricting the blood vessel, which in turn reduces blood flow to that particular part of the body.

When is it best to ice?

According to VeryWell Health, icing is most efficient immediately after an injury has occurred, then diminishes after about 48 hours. It is recommended that ice be applied as soon as possible.

Popular Icing Methods

Icing in intervals and avoiding contact with the bare skin are ideal for preventing frostbite. An ice bag provides a convenient barrier for this. Icing for 15 to 20 minutes, then letting the skin return to normal temperature, then repeating is a commonly used method.
